We’ve covered a few 1000kms by land to get to the Silk Road International Ski Resort just outside Urumqi.

Renowned for one of the steepest ski runs in the country, this is a very short snippet of the good times we had here.

Couple soul turns with the @rycetravel & @kantengri crew on March 1st.

One mega introduction to cat skiing. Thank you Kazakhstan and all involved.

We kicked off our journey in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and since then have covered nearly 3,000km along the Silk Road - by road, train, and cat skis. This leads us to these shots captured in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan.

Between epic shreds, incredible food, and plenty of laughs, we carved out time to soak in local hot springs and ice baths, unwind with relaxing massages, wander vibrant markets, and pick up a few souvenirs along the way.

It’s been an unforgettable adventure so far, and these images come from the closing chapter of our time in “The Stans” before the journey continues onward into China.

Meet the two friendly faces of the awesome guys behind @rycetravel - Peter and Maksat. These shots are from our epic catski day in the birthplace of their operation in Jyrgalan in Kyrgyzstan, but this post touches more on their unique travel experiences and business model. Without them this tour of the Silk Road would not be possible.

Most travel companies aim to maximize profit. Ryce Travel operates as a non-profit organization, meaning the goal is not profit but creating meaningful travel experiences and supporting local communities. They work directly with small local entrepreneurs (guides, guesthouses, drivers, etc.). This ensures that more of the tourism income stays with local people allowing for grassroots growth within communities, and an unforgettable experience of life through locals for us as visitors to these magical lands.

Every element of a trip breathes the thoughtful kindness and nature of their business and true community growth.

Their catski operation in Kyrgyzstan started about 7 years ago and they now operate 4 cats which has allowed for guesthouses, restaurants and an apres ski bar to develop, with Ryce employing nearly 30 people alongside local businesses. They’ve recently purchased a ski lift from Austria and aim to build a ski school and provide lessons for locals in all of their growing destinations.

The epic terrain has lead to bigger investments and the construction of the first of many ski lifts in this region. All of this connects to why @jamiebarrow_gb has embarked on this trip with @natgeotraveluk & @turkishairlines to document the growth of tourism along the Silk Road.

The horse holds deep cultural and historical significance in Kyrgyzstan. For centuries, it has been central to daily life - powering transportation, enabling trade, and providing sustenance - while shaping both the local economy and national identity.

From watching locals battle it out in the thrilling traditional game of Kok-Boru to them wadding through the deepest snow or following peaceful horseback routes through the mountains in search of fresh lines, we’ve experienced firsthand the extraordinary bond between people and horses in this country.

It’s a relationship built on trust, tradition, and a shared rhythm with the land - one that feels nothing short of magical.
